Daniela’s First Month

January 24, 2011 by Lucy

I can’t believe our baby will be one month on the 28th. Here are some of the things we have noticed Daniela does since joining our family:

1. She takes off her blanket and socks if we put them on her.

2. Tries to turn over onto her side and when you pick her up she will lift her head in a jerking motion that scares us.

3. Is always alert when you shake a toy or call her name.

4. Sometimes she will give out a yell that she is hungry and other times she starts to fuss alerting us to prepare a bottle or for me to nurse. She will also stop fussing and coo when I put the bib on her. I have to laugh because even at her young age, she knows when I am going to give her a bottle or the teet.

5. She sweats so much that sometimes we just have her in diapers.

6. When I talk to her she starts to coo, smile, and laugh.

7. When Raul feeds her she gets so comfortable in his arms she falls asleep.

8. JuanGa could be barking very loudly while she is asleep and it won’t wake her up.

9. She loves to be rocked and sung to at the same time; favorite song to sleep to is from the movie Clara’s Heart. The song that Whoopi shows Neal how to sing called, “Brown Skin Girl stay home and mind baby” It was sung by Harry Belafonte as well.

10. When she gets very fussy, she will pull at the back of her hair.

Raul can add any of the things I missed.

Juanga and Daniela

Many folks worried about JuanGa and the baby and what would happen when he saw her for the first time. Prior to bringing her home, I sent him a blanket with Daniela’s smell so he could get used to her. On the day of the arrival, I was excited to see my dog. I did greet him first before Raul entered with Daniela.

Once we let him in the house, he started sniffing away. He was very curios about the new items we were bringing home more than Daniela. Once Maria del Carmen and Carlos Juan left, Raul had him on the collar and he started sniffing the baby’s feet and pamper.

That night we were overwhelmed with the baby waking up at all hours, the dog taking pampers, and the stress of new parents. Raul even wanted to put the dog out. Boy did that not bode well with me. I started to cry hysterically about leaving him outside. Raul in all his graciousness to me, went to the garage and brought up the dog house. JuanGa cried all night and then finally settled down.

The following day he cried a bit because I was holding the baby but I comforted him by rubbing him with my feet. I even had lunch with him the following day after our arrival because he had not eaten. Now that it has been almost two weeks since Daniela’s arrival, JuanGa will come over to her if she starts to cry to see what is going on. He no longer whines when I hold her; he sniffs her feet. One day we all fell asleep in the living room.

The baby in her basinet, JuanGa on the floor, and me in the rocking chair. I make sure to play with him as much as I can especially when the baby is sleeping. Today I took him for a walk.

He has his rabies shot for the year so it is safe for him to be around the baby. Before Maria del Carmen and Carlos Juan got us the play yard, we had her in the bouncy our former nieghbors Luis and Mayra gave us from one of their twin girls. We put her in the bouncy in the office and JuanGa went and laid down right beside her. As time goes by and she gets old enough to play with him, he will be her best friend.

Blue Eyes Green Eyes Brown Eyes Oh My!

Eye 9

Every time there is a Puerto Rican baby born, one of the first things we here people ask is about their weight, height, and their eye color. Yes all Puerto Ricans want their baby with blue or green eyes.

I don’t know what the obsession is but I think it’s silly.

As long as Daniela Lucia can see well, I don’t care what color eyes she ultimately obtains.

The other day my mom and Raul’s mom were having a discussion about eye color. They both stated that it was a possibility for Daniela to have blue or hazel eyes. Well I told them she was going to have brown eyes. I have brown eyes and so does Raul. I mean Raul’s brown is a little lighter than mine, but they are still brown.

So I decided to figure out the genetics behind the color eyes she may end up having. I went to the site in the link below and put the information in that was asked. It came out 92.5% that she would have brown eyes. My sister Veronica has a son Vaughn that has brown eyes. My sister Milta has four children Jon, Michael, Daniel, and Jayda; none came out with her hazel brown eyes.

What do you think her eye color will end up being?

Again as long as she has healthy vision, I don’t care what color they end up. Right now they are blue/gray.
